Sponsorship of Wolves RFC

Asia Tour 2017

RTS Waste Management love to support various causes with in the community, the British Armed forces, sporting events and much more. When the 27th Regiment RLC approached us for support of their 2017 Asia Rugby tour, RTS Waste MD Mark Redmond was proud to say YES.

Family connection to 27th Regiment RLC

One of the Redmond sons  has been in the Army and was part of the 27th Regiment RLC. Therefore, it was great that Luke Redmond saw some for his old Regiment not only go on a dream rugby tour to Asia, but be supreme and win every rugby match. After an epic flight from UK it was worth it getting the kit with the RTS Waste logo.

First Stop Brunei

First game day was 28th March 2017, University of Brunei (Sharks) v The Wolves RFC which Wolves won 20 – 3. Playing their second and final 15’s match of rugby before going on to their 10’s competition and they finished with a victory 39 – 21 against the Brunei Barbarians.

Rugby 10’s Kowloon

With thanks for sponsoring them , Wolves RFC Alan O’Neill said “it meant a lot that we had faith to sponsor the Wolves and it was a driving factor for them to succeed.” On the 1st April they remained unbeaten on the tour after playing the Flying Kukuri 10’s. Next was the Kowloon 10’s in Hong Kong where they were looking to finish the tour strong. It was the 16th Kowloon Rugby Fest that the Wolves RFC were through to the Plate.  Two winning tries by the Wright brothers put the the whole squad in well deserved celebration winning the Plate. woot woot!

Separate Waste Collections Saves Money

There are been a lot of TV and radio exposure recently including on the “One Show” trying to make everyone understand those items which and can’t be recycling. There is still so much variation depending on your waste management contractor.

PLEASE refer to our informative FACTSHEETS available from our website download from Here  For our Trade Waste customers there should be labels on the relevant bins to help all users know what RTS Waste will accept and recycle . Separate collections is an important aspect of ensuring the maximum amount of waste is treated correctly and the minimum amount of waste avoids going to landfill.

Food Waste goes to Anaerobic Digestion Plant

Food waste collections by RTS Waste is all going to a local Anaerobic Digestive (AD) plant, working in collaboration is closing the loop of the circular economy. This means when you have a food waste collection by RTS, 100% of the waste is put to good use in regenerating other products such as compost and the gases produced are captured and used in energy regeneration.

The food materials are re-processed and recycled into new products, such as liquid fat, also known as tallow, and protein meal. The tallow, or liquid recovered from the food waste can be used in the production of biodiesel or as a renewable energy fuel source, produced by a process known as anaerobic digestion (AD) to generate power for biomass Combined Heat & Power(CHP) plants.

The European Commission is taking the issue of tackling food waste very seriously. Being more efficient will save money and lower the environmental impact of food production and consumption.

The packaging of food waste is also a big problem, with increased convenience foods available in the UK  and pressure should be placed more onto the producers of packaging to ensure the materials used are more recyclable.

Leading on from the the above article RTS want to emphasise the NEED for our customers to separate their waste. You may have received emails from us requesting to come to your site to do a waste audit. RTS offer General Waste, Dry Mixed Recycle and Glass collections. It will be CHEAPER for you and better for the environment if you separate your dry recycle materials.

For Orders, Quotations or Queries for the separate  food waste service call 0207 232 1711 or email sales@rtswaste.co.uk

Annual Price Increase

You should have received a written communication this month about the annual price increase that will effect all our customers. This is unavoidable and the reasons are across the industry not unique to RTS Waste.

The RTS customer service manager  can be contacted on csfeedback@rtswaste.co.uk if you have any questions, alternatively contact your Business Development manager at sales@rtswaste.co.uk

It has been a pleasure to serve you in the past and we very much look forward to continuing our business with you in the future. 2016 was an exciting year with a lot of changes taking place for us, the introduction of PDA’s for our drivers proved to be a bigger challenge than anticipated but we remain focused on our goal of becoming completely paperless.

Escalating recycling costs and maintaining the ever changing legislation equips RTS with the latest safety features, vehicle upgrades and staff training to ensure pedestrian and cycle awareness.

With talks of Brexit still looming over us and the 20% devaluation of the GBP£ against the Euro€ it has meant the market rate for commodities remains low, whilst EFW plants (Energy from Waste) costs increase along with the requirement of zero to landfill. All of these unavoidable costs continue their upward spiral to apply pressures on all of our services.

Despite our best internal cost containment measures, we have seen costs consistently rise and we are unable to sustain the current expenditure any longer. This has left us with little option but to reflect this in our prices going forward. It is with regret that we have to inform you of an unavoidable price increase.  However, we are confident that you will find the quality of our services improving daily whilst remaining competitively priced.

The price increase will be effective from 1st April 2017

The bin is called Nancy and visits various public places with the pure motive to entertain the general public with a very “Silly Idea of the unexpected. People see the bin moving along of its own accord and start to wonder how is it working.. Is someone inside ?

Our Extended Family

Ernest Thomas – Driver

This edition of our headline NEWS we would like to introduce you to one of the Drivers:Ernest is a driver that has been with RTS for two years, he qualified 38 years earlier when in the Army 210 Squadron of the Royal Core of Transport. It is his dream job and always wanted to follow the same path as his late father and uncle, which he used to join in the Drivers cab from a young teenager.

Ernest is classed as a multi purpose driver that means he can drive any of the RTS Waste fleet vehicles, sometimes it will be the Dustcart, but he can also drive Skip or Roll On Roll Off vehicles as well. Ernest loves the freedom of the road as opposed to being behind a desk in an office. When asked if the busy traffic in London gets him down he said “not really I take each day as it comes and not bothered by traffic jams”.

Ernest does remember his first day with RTS Waste, unfortunately he got splashed by waste from a fish shop and when he got home after his shift his wife said “Get your clothes off” Ernest says “I thought I was on a promise… but it was because of the smell !”

Ernest is always cheerful and really is a credit to the company. Outside of work he enjoys DIY and is currently making a large scale 21 for his daughters birthday. Lastly, one fact that took his colleagues by surprise is he came 3rd in the UK Disco dancing championship back in 1976!  We can’t wait for the next RTS party for you to take the floor.

Our Extended Family

This edition of our headline NEWS we would like to introduce you to our IT Project Leader :

Katie Blackmore as IT Project Leader

Katie has been with RTS Waste since 2013 and bring with her extensive IT experience from a few different industries. Her role is to guide RTS Waste through the continuous implementation of technological improvements, particularly on the logistics software used to run our waste collection services.

Katie is a bit “Mad” she won’t mind me saying that. She is always looking to try new things ! For example last weekend she was very relaxed at a target practice range with a Beretta M1923  in her hands !

As IT Project Leader Katie says the people she works with is the best part of her job, particularly sitting opposite Emma and the commute from Ashford to Bermondsey is the worst. Perhaps it’s because Katie prefers sky diving that being on the congested A2 and M20  roads frustrates her…. doesn’t it  frustrate all us commuters? Katie works alongside a great team of people in the RTS Transport Department to assist in keeping our logistics running. With 40 vehicles in our entire fleet the odd dropping in with a parachute would be most useful sometimes. Although unrealistic! Stick to your dream job Katie of being a Sky Diving camera woman.

South London Derby

Celebrations In Full Swing

Just before Christmas, RTS Waste was the Match Sponsor for the South London derby of Millwall v’s Charlton Athletic. The Millwall football stadium is adjacent to the RTS Waste Bermondsey yard on Stockholm Road. As a family run waste management and skip hire company supporting the local community is an important aspect to our business and this is why RTS has actively become an advertising sponsor for the local football team.  It was perfect timing to get into the mood before Christmas, on Wednesday 21st December night’s match at the Den. Everyone encountered an exciting performance in front of a season’s best home attendance of 14,395.

Photograph: from left to right : Rocky Woods, Callum Terry, Millwall player Ben Thompson and Albei Greasly.

The night had some very special RTS Waste guests to watch The Lions. Christmas is for children and for these three in particular this made an excellent celebration in full swing to watch the local South London derby football match.

After three successive defeats the Lions raced into a 2-0 lead with quick fire goals before the break, scored by Steve Morison. Millwall also came out flying of the traps at the start of the second half, but were stunned when Charlton reduced the arrears on 49 minutes against the run of play. Charlton rarely threatened a solid looking Lions and the roar of the Lions could be heard  when they eventually took the derby honours against Charlton Athletic at The Den with a 3 – 1 win.

Family Business with Family Values

The children which RTS had invited were so excited Albei Gresley said

” This is the best days of my life”. Albei is just 7 years old and can be seen here in the line up with Millwall mascot Zampa the Lion. Sights like this put a smile on your face, to work for a company that has a caring side to it makes a difference.

The Truth of Fly Tipping

Exposing the Public to the hideous Fly Tipping.

Vacant buildings in towns and cities are often affected and fall victim to fly tipping by rouges that are NOT licensed “man and van”companies that charge very little. Everyone wants to get best value for money; especially with something as unattractive as the removal of waste. However PLEASE note that if your waste is found on such a fly tipping site because you did not employ a proper licensed waste management company then YOU WILL BE FINED and held responsible  This is not always known by the general public.

Just this week RTS Waste were approached to visit a nearby building to quote for  the clearance of a vast amount of waste. In South East London near Bermondsey, round the corner from our Transfer Station at SE16 3LP. An area of about 60 x 25 metre squared was totally covered in mixed waste about 1.5 metre high. Not sure how long it had been there causing a tremendous amount of environmental damage. The vermin and causality of a building laid vacant for some time in this condition.

Tougher Enforcement

Despite the threat of environmental enforcement fines ranging from £500 upwards, it is not stopping some scoundrels in this world who are dishonest and give the waste industry a bad name. It is RTS’s  intention to provide our customers and local community with the knowledge to know how to prevent this from happening.

The obligations require that all in the waste chain take “reasonable” steps to ensure  waste is not deposited unlawfully or cause harm.

Clearly Cheapest is not always Best

Tackling waste crime is not easy for local councils or the EA (Environmental Agency) to keep regulated attention on the 4 million waste producers. Businesses large or small  need to know the responsibility that as a WASTE PRODUCER it should be with them on checking the correct licensed waste carriers collect and treat their waste.

RTS Waste is a licensed waste management company that will not be the cheapest but we are professional and will treat your waste according to regulations and have a target for zero waste to landfill. Please do not fall victim to this unlawful waste crime.

We hope you’ve all had a good summer, it’s been a busy one for us with a new accreditation, lots more customers having separate recycling collections and reducing there waste to landfill. Also the industry Resource Waste Management show in Birmingham had a few interesting announcements that we would like to  share with you about WRAP and the new 3 R’s !

 The Green Agenda

“our only hope is to transform humanity into a global interdependent sustainable society, based on respect and reverence for the Earth.”

Linked to The Green Agenda is the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges. (EAUC)

RTS Waste is delighted to announce that we have just gained a further accreditation and we are proud to say that we are now a BRONZE Member for the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges. The EAUC is a not-for-profit organisation supporting sustainability within the UK Education sector.

Zero landfill IS achievable!

 WRAP new 3 R’s

3rs-v5

Are you  familiar with the Waste Hierarchy and the 3 R’s being REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE.These are of course mandatory for all business and even increasingly prominent in our own day to day lives at home too. With Hugh Fernely Whittingstall getting fantastic attention to make the general public aware of the quantity of waste being produced is unsustainable if the environment is to be protected for future generations. This is why the Circular Economy is critical .

WRAP is a not-for-profit organisation highly respected as a driving force in the Waste and Resource sector. The new chief executive Marcus Gover launched his vision for getting the Circular Economy more strategically placed. In short he outlined the new  3R’s RE-INVENT, RE-THINK & RE- DEFINE!

Producers should be taking this into account. Longevity of products, even if extending a product life by 3 months will have a profound impact. Following a model that does not depend on selling large volumes; that explores the full service life of a product (maintain it, repair it before considering upgrading it) and finally a model that captures the value left in a product when it is no longer required, enabling it to be re used or recycled.

If your business needs further advise on how you can become more sustainable and get on board with this sustainable solution from Business development and a commercial consultant available to give professional advise then please give RTS Waste a call.

Our Extended Family

This edition of our headline NEWS we would like to introduce you to our video superstar and our newest member in the Accounts department; both have flying high in common!

Jason McLeod as Recycling Operations Manager.

Jason is the star of the RTS Waste video See the “How we Process Our Waste” video  HERE . Definitely a high flyer, from wanting to be a ‘pilot’ when a child he has worked hard over the past 10 years with RTS Waste. The great thing about Jason is his understanding of our yard to get the best out of the logistics and treating the waste as a resource. His famed line in the video is

” This yard is like the heart beat of the company” and he is so right !   jason-mcleod

Jasons’ hobby is listening to music and is passionate about what music brings to the world. In fact Jason has written a few tracks himself. When asked to choose one lyric to share in the newsletter it is this;

” Winners never quit and quitters never win,
you got to keep trying
as what’s worth having never comes easy”

Jason also enjoys many movies and one of his favourite is Lord of the Rings, Legolas is his hero  of the movie and the traits he represents very much sums up Jason as a person; conscientious and very willing to get his job right.

Macaulay Caseley is Junior Accounts clerk

Macaulay is the  newbie of the office in Bermondsey. Only been with us 4 weeks and gathered that the company co-workers have a good sense of humour. He has not found anything he does not like about the job YET! and seems very positive.  Macaulay says the best part of his job is ” a sense of achievement and being part of a constructive team. At my previous job I don’t believe my skills and abilities we’re acknowledged so to come to a company of which appreciates their workforce and putting in 110% leaves me feeling content with my workplace when I go home every day.”

Flying High    macaulay-caseley

Macaulay thinks being a pilot is the best job; just to appreciate some of the breath taking views, to travel the different corners of the planet and experience everything this world has to offer! On his flights he would love to bring along David Attenborough  to talk him through the animal kingdom and wildlife on his travels!

While not dreaming Macaulay’s’ feet are firmly on the ground renovating his flat and improving his already established diy and decorating skills. Certainly a multi-talented young lad who is welcomed aboard the family run  RTS Waste  !
