Glass

Why recycle Glass?

Glass that is thrown away and ends up in landfills will never decompose. Even taking into account the proliferation of bottle banks, we still recycle less than 1 in 6 of the bottles sold in the UK.

Glass recycling is the process of reuse waste glass into other usable products. If separated into the different colours and types of glass then 100% of the glass can be recycled. Therefore it is important for everyone to make the effort into having a separate collection for glass to reduce volume of waste to Landfill.

Recycling glass from new glass uses less energy than manufacturing glass from sand, lime and soda. The energy saved by recycling just one bottle will power a computer for 25 minutes. Recycled glass also helps in the manufacture of brick, ceramics and construction materials as aggregate in concrete and groundwork’s preparation such as pea gravel.

How is the Glass recycled?

Glass is not permitted in our Dry Mixed Recycled bin. RTS Waste offer a completely separate  scheduled glass collections.

For Commercial businesses having glass waste such as bottles and jars, it is recommended to have 240 or 360 Litre wheeled bins. A cost effective service that is discounted compared to the normal municipal collection. The smaller sized container is recommended due to the heavy weight of the glass material.

For Construction and Industrial Sites glass such as that from window panes will also be recycled, whether it is toughened glass or plane sheet glass.  If the glass is in large sheets a dedicated haulage service will need to be arranged to go straight to the glass recover centre.

Glass can also be placed into General Waste and  will be treated at our Waste Transfer Stations. The waste is segregated and recovered by way of our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) but there are limitations to the quality of the recycling. It is strongly recommended to have segregated glass collections where possible and RTS Waste have separate waste collections that can be scheduled at your convenience.
