Why recycle?
435 million tonnes of waste is produced in the UK each year. DEFRA states that we recycle only 18%, which is below the recycling rates acheived by some of our European neighbours. The recycling of our paper, cardboard, glass, plastics and metals is currently estimated to save over 18 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent green house gas emissions (WRAP).
- recycling one tin can would save enough energy to power a television for three hours
- recycling one glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes
- recycling one plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours
- 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials |
