Skip hire services are a very convenient way to dispose of waste. Commercial businesses can make great use out of this method of waste disposal, so if you’re interested in skip hire in Kent, get in touch with the RTS Waste Management team today by calling 0207 232 1711.

Get The Most Out Of Your Skip – 3 Things To Remember

When disposing of waste via a skip, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Here’s a quick list of 3.

  1. Put Larger & Lighter Items In Your Skip First
At first you might be tempted to put heavier objects into your skip first. However, this is actually less optimal with regards to space optimisation. This is because heavy objects will push lighter items of waste closer to the bottom of the skip, which results in less space being wasted.

  2. Dismantle Or Flatten Waste Before Throwing It In
In order to maximise your use of space in a skip, it’s important that you remember to dismantle or flatten any waste before throwing it away. By breaking the item down into smaller pieces, you’ll find they take up less room in the skip, leaving fewer pockets of empty space.

Dismantling or breaking down items of waste also makes it easier to avoid overloading a skip. Remember; an overloaded skip is a hazard and as such the lorry driver could refuse to remove the skip altogether, which could result in additional charges.

  3. Don’t Throw Unsuitable Waste In A Skip
It is crucial that you understand what you can and cannot put in a skip. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to throw hazardous waste in a general waste skip. Please remember that you are legally responsible for the contents of the skip you hire.

For example, the following cannot be disposed of via a skip: asbestos, WEEE (waste electric and electronic equipment), car tyres, and plasterboard.

In recent decades many businesses and individuals throughout the United Kingdom have sought out ways that they can adjust their professional and personal lives in order to reduce the impact their activities has on the planet. However, have you considered your business’ waste management and disposal activities? Is it sustainable, or is there room for improvement?

How Can Waste Damage The Environment?

When disposed of in an unsustainable and irresponsible manner, waste can be very destructive to the environment. For example, unsustainably disposed of plastic, food, and hazardous waste can all cause significant harm to people and the planet.

  • Plastic Waste
When irresponsibly disposed of, plastic waste is very harmful to the environment. Did you know that every year we throw away enough plastic each year to circle the Earth four times! Additionally, in the Pacific Ocean there is a floating mass of plastic which is twice the size of the US state of Texas. In this area, the plastic outnumbers local sea life at a ratio of 6:1.

The scale of plastic pollution is so serious that one million sea birds are killed every year as a result of plastic in the ocean. As such, it is vital that businesses and individuals dispose of plastic in responsible manners that follow the waste hierarchy.

  • Food Waste
Items of food waste damage the environment in numerous different ways. For example, waste food in landfill contributes to global warming. When people think about climate change and greenhouse gasses, they often think about carbon dioxide and ways that they can reduce their carbon footprint. However, methane gas is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide, accounting for approximately 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions.

Global warming is a very serious threat to the entire planet. Did you know that according to data on NASA’s website, the Arctic sea ice has been declining by 13.3% per decade? – For those who are sceptical about the impact that global warming has on the planet, NASA has detailed information regarding the scientific consensus that the Earth is warming.

However, it’s also important to note that climate change isn’t just global warming. The changing climate has numerous other impacts on our planet. For example in the United Kingdom, climate change could result in an increased risk of flooding in both coastal and inland areas.

  • Hazardous Waste
As its name suggestions, hazardous waste can be very dangerous – to both people and the environment. In the short term, hazardous waste can cause issues with regards to water pollution; making streams, rivers, or lakes unsuitable for use in agriculture or unsafe to drink.

However, in the long term, hazardous waste can be devastating to populations of bees, which are a vital part of the life cycle with numerous plants dependant on them to reproduce. Additionally, hazardous waste is linked to the destruction of natural environments, natural resources, and in some cases hazardous waste “can lead to cancer, seizures, poisoning and death”.

How Can You Responsibly And Sustainably Dispose Of Waste?

The above examples of how different types of waste can damage the environment are indeed quite alarming. In order to preserve the planet it is vital that businesses and individuals take steps to make their disposal habits more sustainable in through responsible waste disposal practices.

  • Plastic Waste
The amount of plastic waste in the world’s oceans is indeed terrifying. However, if you are drinking bottled water, you’ll be reassured to know that one of the more common forms of plastic used to create drinks bottles is Polyethylene terephthalate (often abbreviated to PET or PETE).

However, according to information on Recycle Now, 44% of plastic bottles are not currently placed into recycling and the number of plastic bottles that are not recycled could be as high as 29 billion by the end of 2020. That’s less than two years away.
Remember that plastic items which are made from PET or PETE are highly recyclable. This means that, you can help to reduce your impact on the environment by disposing of plastic bottles in an appropriate plastic recycling service.

  • Food Waste
As discussed above, when disposed of via landfill, items of food waste release methane gas as they break down, which contributes to climate change.

There are numerous different ways that every-day people and businesses can fight the effects of climate change, one such way is by tackling food waste. You can help to make a difference by choosing to dispose of your food waste using a food recycling disposal solution such as anaerobic digestion or composting.

  • Hazardous Waste
As discussed above, there are numerous different items of hazardous waste. Waste is classified as hazardous if it is or has potential to be harmful to people, animals, or the environment. One example of hazardous waste is laboratory chemicals. So if your business produces waste laboratory chemicals, how can you dispose of your waste in a responsible and sustainable manner?

Previously this form of waste was disposed of via incineration, however in today’s society there are much more economical and sustainable alternatives that businesses can choose to dispose of their chemical waste. For example, you could send waste laboratory chemicals to a specialist facility where they are used as an alternative energy source.

Waste Disposal And Saving Money – Is Waste Segregation The Answer?

According to an independently researched report by the Renewable Energy Association (REA) on the collection of food waste and other such biowastes, separate food and biowaste collections could result in cost savings for businesses and local authorities.

Additionally, in most scenarios, it was noted that by improving their management of food waste, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, helping the United Kingdom work towards their 2020 recycling target, which is a recycling target of 50% by 2020.

Currently the UK is at a recycling level of 45% and whilst that is indeed close to the target, our recycling rate is falling. As such it is very important that all businesses and individuals do everything that they can in order to improve their waste management practices and recycle as much as they can.

What Are The Monetary Advantages Of Recycling For Businesses?

In addition to the environmental benefits of increasing the amount of waste recycled by your business, there is a potential for significant reductions in costs.

Indeed, by implementing waste segregation practices and collecting food waste separately, you can reduce the weight of general waste produced by your business, which results in a lower cost for general waste disposal. This is due to the lower overall weight which results in a reduction of any excess weight charges on Trade Bin Collections.

However, this is not the only area in which your business will save money through waste segregation practices. In addition to paying lower fees for disposing of your general waste, you will also save money by choosing to recycle your food waste. This is because the gate fees at food waste collection sites such as anaerobic digestion or composting facilities have significantly lower fees in comparison to landfill disposal. At RTS Waste all general trade waste does not go to landfill because we target zero landfill. All trade general waste goes to EWFW Energy from Waste as a Recovery process.

How Can RTS Waste Management In London Help Your Business Save Money?

In order to help your business improve your waste management, help your business become more environmentally friendly, and help you business to save money; we can provide numerous commercial recycling services with options for recycling targets ranging from 80% to Zero Landfill.Helping your business work towards the 2020 UK recycling target of 50%.

Our team can recycle waste such as:

  • General Recycling Waste.
  • Dry Mixed Waste.
  • Wood.
  • Metal And Aluminium.
  • Cardboard And Paper.
  • Glass.
  • Plastics
  • Mixed Construction Waste.
  • Hard-Core / Brick / Concrete / Stone.
  • Soils And Green Waste.
  • Textiles.

Additionally, the RTS team can also provide waste recycling solutions for Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment, Tyres, medical waste, and some forms of hazardous waste. Additionally, all items of hazardous waste collected by RTS will be sent to a waste treatment centre which is appropriately equipped to deal with such specialist wastes.

A Waste Solution That Follows The Waste Hierarchy

Whilst recycling is indeed preferable to disposal, the ideal solution is a zero waste solution. That is why we are committed to providing London waste disposal solutions that focus on Reuse, Recycle and Recovery in that order first and foremost.

We understand that the disposal of waste has the potential to damage the environment. For example, when disposed of in a landfill, items of food waste break down and release methane gas into the atmosphere. Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change and global warming.

When many people think of greenhouse gasses, they often imagine fossil fuels releasing gasses such as carbon dioxide into the air. However, did you know that methane, the gas produced by items of food waste in landfills is about 20 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide? So, whilst strategies such as a cycle to work scheme are fantastic ways to help your business reduce its carbon footprint, you could reduce your bottom line and help the environment at the same time by implementing a waste recycling solution that segregates and recycles food waste.

As a licensed Carrier, Broker, Dealer – Upper Tier, we are committed to providing high quality solutions and services for the disposal of waste in manner that follows the waste hierarchy. So if you would like to save money and recycle your business’ waste, get in touch with the RTS Waste team today.

RTS Waste Management can provide a wide range of professional waste management and disposal solutions; many of which are commercial waste management services.

So if you would like to make an enquiry regarding a disposal solution for commercial/business waste, please get in touch with our team by calling 0207 232 1711. However, if you are unsure what is required for waste to be classified as commercial, here’s a quick explanation to give you a helping hand.

What Is Commercial Waste?

According to information from Gov.UK, waste is identified as commercial or business waste if it originates from commercial activities. This includes businesses which are ran from home.

As such, commercial/business waste can include the following types of waste.

  • Construction Waste
  • Demolition Waste.
  • Industrial Waste.

However, it is important to note that commercial/business waste is not limited to the above three different categories of waste. As stated above, waste is identified as commercial waste if it originates from commercial activities. So if you’re producing waste from an office building, in a retail environment, or whilst building a house, you need a professional and legally compliant waste management solution for commercial/business activities.

How Do You Know Your Waste Is Being Disposed Of In A Responsible and Legally Compliant Manner?

Waste has the potential to be harmful to the environment; as such it is very important that waste is disposed of in a responsible manner that complies with all relevant legislation and regulations. Indeed, earlier this year the Environment secretary Michael Gove has launched a review into both serious and organised waste crime and there was a warning from the Home Office that “people are being conned into placing contracts with dodgy waste firms”. So how can you make sure that your waste is being disposed of in a responsible and legally compliant manner? How do you know your waste management business isn’t a “dodgy waste firm”?

If you would like to check if a waste management company is a registered waste management business, you can do so by visiting the Environment Agency website. For example, if you search for “RTS Waste Management”, you will see that we are a registered Carrier, Broker, Dealer – Upper Tier. So before you organise a waste management service, remember to check if a waste management business is registered.

Additionally, if you are interested in learning information about RTS Waste Management’s commitment to the environment, please read our Environmental Policy. You can find a link to this document on our Licences, Certificates, and Accreditations page.

Separate Waste Collections Saves Money

There are been a lot of TV and radio exposure recently including on the “One Show” trying to make everyone understand those items which and can’t be recycling. There is still so much variation depending on your waste management contractor.

PLEASE refer to our informative FACTSHEETS available from our website download from Here For our Trade Waste customers there should be labels on the relevant bins to help all users know what RTS Waste will accept and recycle . Separate collections is an important aspect of ensuring the maximum amount of waste is treated correctly and the minimum amount of waste avoids going to landfill.

Food Waste goes to Anaerobic Digestion Plant

Food waste collections by RTS Waste is all going to a local Anaerobic Digestive (AD) plant, working in collaboration is closing the loop of the circular economy. This means when you have a food waste collection by RTS, 100% of the waste is put to good use in regenerating other products such as compost and the gases produced are captured and used in energy regeneration.

The food materials are re-processed and recycled into new products, such as liquid fat, also known as tallow, and protein meal. The tallow, or liquid recovered from the food waste can be used in the production of biodiesel or as a renewable energy fuel source, produced by a process known as anaerobic digestion (AD) to generate power for biomass Combined Heat & Power(CHP) plants.

The European Commission is taking the issue of tackling food waste very seriously. Being more efficient will save money and lower the environmental impact of food production and consumption.

The packaging of food waste is also a big problem, with increased convenience foods available in the UK  and pressure should be placed more onto the producers of packaging to ensure the materials used are more recyclable.

Leading on from the the above article RTS want to emphasise the NEED for our customers to separate their waste. You may have received emails from us requesting to come to your site to do a waste audit. RTS offer General Waste, Dry Mixed Recycle and Glass collections. It will be CHEAPER for you and better for the environment if you separate your dry recycle materials.

For Orders, Quotations or Queries for the separate  food waste service call 0207 232 1711 or email sales@rtswaste.co.uk

Annual Price Increase

You should have received a written communication this month about the annual price increase that will effect all our customers. This is unavoidable and the reasons are across the industry not unique to RTS Waste.

The RTS customer service manager  can be contacted on csfeedback@rtswaste.co.uk if you have any questions, alternatively contact your Business Development manager at sales@rtswaste.co.uk

It has been a pleasure to serve you in the past and we very much look forward to continuing our business with you in the future. 2016 was an exciting year with a lot of changes taking place for us, the introduction of PDA’s for our drivers proved to be a bigger challenge than anticipated but we remain focused on our goal of becoming completely paperless.

Escalating recycling costs and maintaining the ever changing legislation equips RTS with the latest safety features, vehicle upgrades and staff training to ensure pedestrian and cycle awareness.

With talks of Brexit still looming over us and the 20% devaluation of the GBP£ against the Euro€ it has meant the market rate for commodities remains low, whilst EFW plants (Energy from Waste) costs increase along with the requirement of zero to landfill. All of these unavoidable costs continue their upward spiral to apply pressures on all of our services.

Despite our best internal cost containment measures, we have seen costs consistently rise and we are unable to sustain the current expenditure any longer. This has left us with little option but to reflect this in our prices going forward. It is with regret that we have to inform you of an unavoidable price increase.  However, we are confident that you will find the quality of our services improving daily whilst remaining competitively priced.

The price increase will be effective from 1st April 2017

Our Extended Family

Ernest Thomas – Driver

This edition of our headline NEWS we would like to introduce you to one of the Drivers:Ernest is a driver that has been with RTS for two years, he qualified 38 years earlier when in the Army 210 Squadron of the Royal Core of Transport. It is his dream job and always wanted to follow the same path as his late father and uncle, which he used to join in the Drivers cab from a young teenager.

Ernest is classed as a multi purpose driver that means he can drive any of the RTS Waste fleet vehicles, sometimes it will be the Dustcart, but he can also drive Skip or Roll On Roll Off vehicles as well. Ernest loves the freedom of the road as opposed to being behind a desk in an office. When asked if the busy traffic in London gets him down he said “not really I take each day as it comes and not bothered by traffic jams”.

Ernest does remember his first day with RTS Waste, unfortunately he got splashed by waste from a fish shop and when he got home after his shift his wife said “Get your clothes off” Ernest says “I thought I was on a promise… but it was because of the smell !”

Ernest is always cheerful and really is a credit to the company. Outside of work he enjoys DIY and is currently making a large scale 21 for his daughters birthday. Lastly, one fact that took his colleagues by surprise is he came 3rd in the UK Disco dancing championship back in 1976!  We can’t wait for the next RTS party for you to take the floor.

Implementing Digital Devices

Our IT Project Leader Katie Blackmore announced that “From February 2017 we will be implementing our new digital driver apps on the skip and roll on vehicles.” an exciting advancement “We are here to become more environmentally friendly together and please be assured, you will all be kept updated on our progress moving forward with this project. ”

She would like to reassure all the RTS customers “As this will be a trial phase, please note that by site staff signing the paper and digital tickets, you will not be charged twice as both signatures will be for the same job number.

The RTS customer service manager will be in contact at the next stage of this project which will be to phase out the paper tickets.”

Promotional Night Service

From 1st March 2017 RTS are promoting a Night Service of your Wheeled Bins and Bag collections.  This will enable all the offices and businesses that have a cleaning service coming in after normal hours to put the rubbish out and then RTS Waste will be running a waste collection service between the hours of 9:00 pm to 5:00 am in the London area. using our small dust cart for these collections enables us to avoid the 18 tonne weight restriction for London traffic.

So if you would like to consider moving over to this Night Service then please give our Business Development  team a call to make the arrangements. This service has no additional charges and could be beneficial to your business by having the waste collected at a more convenient time when there is less traffic and pedestrian congestion. There are also environmental benefits to having the waste collected at the earliest opportunity.

Call 0207 232 1711 or email sales@rtswaste.co.uk & ask for NIGHT SERVICE

 Separate Waste Collections Saves Money

Leading on from the the above article RTS want to emphasise the NEED for our customers to separate their waste. You may have received emails from us requesting to come to your site to do a waste audit.

RTS offer General Waste, Dry Mixed Recycle and Glass collections. It will be CHEAPER for you and better for the environment if you separate your dry recycle materials.  For Orders, Quotations or Queries call 0207 232 1711

Recently, we have noticed there has been a rise in contaminated loads and this has led to RTS performing checks on each bin that we service. If the waste is not correctly separated then there could be additional costs incurred. Please take time to put the right waste in your bins.

DRY MIXED RECYCLING : Cardboard, Paper, Plastic, Glass, Cans

Our Extended Family

This edition of our headline NEWS we would like to introduce you to our IT Project Leader :

Katie Blackmore as IT Project Leader

Katie has been with RTS Waste since 2013 and bring with her extensive IT experience from a few different industries. Her role is to guide RTS Waste through the continuous implementation of technological improvements, particularly on the logistics software used to run our waste collection services.

Katie is a bit “Mad” she won’t mind me saying that. She is always looking to try new things ! For example last weekend she was very relaxed at a target practice range with a Beretta M1923  in her hands !

As IT Project Leader Katie says the people she works with is the best part of her job, particularly sitting opposite Emma and the commute from Ashford to Bermondsey is the worst. Perhaps it’s because Katie prefers sky diving that being on the congested A2 and M20  roads frustrates her…. doesn’t it  frustrate all us commuters? Katie works alongside a great team of people in the RTS Transport Department to assist in keeping our logistics running. With 40 vehicles in our entire fleet the odd dropping in with a parachute would be most useful sometimes. Although unrealistic! Stick to your dream job Katie of being a Sky Diving camera woman.

Celebrations In Full Swing

Just before Christmas, RTS Waste was the Match Sponsor for the South London derby of Millwall v’s Charlton Athletic. The Millwall football stadium is adjacent to the RTS Waste Bermondsey yard on Stockholm Road. As a family run waste management and skip hire company supporting the local community is an important aspect to our business and this is why RTS has actively become an advertising sponsor for the local football team.  It was perfect timing to get into the mood before Christmas, on Wednesday 21st December night’s match at the Den. Everyone encountered an exciting performance in front of a season’s best home attendance of 14,395.

The night had some very special RTS Waste guests to watch The Lions. Christmas is for children and for these three in particular this made an excellent celebration in full swing to watch the local South London derby football match.

After three successive defeats the Lions raced into a 2-0 lead with quick fire goals before the break, scored by Steve Morison. Millwall also came out flying of the traps at the start of the second half, but were stunned when Charlton reduced the arrears on 49 minutes against the run of play. Charlton rarely threatened a solid looking Lions and the roar of the Lions could be heard  when they eventually took the derby honours against Charlton Athletic at The Den with a 3 – 1 win.

Family Business with Family Values

The children which RTS had invited were so excited Albei Gresley said

” This is the best days of my life”. Albei is just 7 years old and can be seen here in the line up with Millwall mascot Zampa the Lion. Sights like this put a smile on your face, to work for a company that has a caring side to it makes a difference.
