Why recycle Plastic?
275,000 tonnes of plastic are used each year in the UK, that’s about 15 million bottles per day.
Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose.
The use of plastic in Western Europe is growing about 4% each year.
More energy is saved by recycling plastics than is gained by burning them.
RTS Waste collect plastics in a co-mingled mixed recycle collection, along with card, cans, paper and glass. We then use their Material Recovery Facility to separate and recover the plastic for recycling.

How Plastics are recycled
The majority of plastic received is categorised into PET, LDPE and HDPE before being baled and then shipped for the next process of recycling. To make a single stream plastic collection viable you would need to be producing significant volumes of plastic for recycling. Our Technical Sales Team would require a sample of this plastic to identify the optimum outlet for the plastic to be recycled. Call our Technical Sales Team for further information: 0207 232 1711.
Offsite the last stage of the plastic recycling is a heat based process. The plastic is melted down and either reformed into new product or compounded with additives and colourants and pelletised into high quality raw materials that can be used to manufacture new products.
New products made from recycled plastic include:
- New sustainable construction materials
- Plastic decking
- Plastic façade panels,
- Plastic sheet piling
- Occasional plastic bridges.
As Plastics can take up to 400 years to break down in a landfill it is critically important for all businesses to understand the importance of recycling and protecting our environment
